Lettera 6 di Spinoza a Oldenburg, 1661

Per quanto riguarda la vostra nuova domanda sull’origine delle cose e il collegamento che le lega alla causa prima, ho impostato un intero lavoro su questo tema e anche sulla purificazione della comprensione; sono occupato a scriverlo e a correggerlo. Ma a volte abbandono questa opera, perché non ho preso nessuna decisione sulla sua pubblicazione. Temo infatti che i teologi del nostro tempo si sentano offesi  e che mi attacchino nel modo odioso a cui sono abituati, proprio io che ho orrore delle polemiche. Prenderò in considerazione il vostro consiglio riguardo a questo affare e perché voi sappiate quale tesi contenuta nel mio lavoro possa dispiacere ai predicatori, vorrei dirvi che considero come creature [cose create, inventate] molte delle proprietà attribuite a Dio da loro e da tutti gli autori da me conosciuti; mentre considero come attributi di Dio altre cose da loro considerate, in virtù di pregiudizi, come cose create, e mi applico per dimostrare che non le capiscono bene.

Inoltre, non stabilisco tra Dio e la natura la stessa separazione che gli autori di mia conoscenza hanno stabilito. Chiedo quindi la vostra opinione, vedendo in voi un amico molto fedele la cui fede sarebbe un crimine metterne in dubbio la lealtà. Lettera 6, De Fluiditate 5, in risposta a Oldenburg 

(francais) A moins que nous ne puissions le prouver par les expériences chimiques. – Jamais personne ne réussira à le prouver par des expériences chimiques ni par aucune sorte d’expériences, mais seulement par un raisonnement démonstratif et le calcul. Par le raisonnement en effet nous divisons les corps à l’infini et conséquemment aussi les forces requises pour les mouvoir ; mais nous ne pourrons jamais prouver cela par des expériences.

 A New Reading of Spinoza’s Letter 32 to Oldenburg: Spinoza and the Agreement between Bodies in the Universe

By coherence of parts I mean simply this, that the laws or nature of one part adapts itself to the laws or nature of another part in such wise that there is the least possible opposition between them. On the question of whole and parts, I consider things as parts of a whole to the extent that their natures adapt themselves to one another so that they are in the closest possible agreement. Insofar as they are dif-ferent from one another, to that extent each one forms in our mind a separate idea and is therefore considered as a whole, not a part.
