Gli autoritratti sono stati fatti prima che il concetto di “sé” prendesse una forma definita. Gli artisti hanno usato prima gli specchi, poi la fotografia, poi il video e lo smartphone che ha introdotto il selfie e l’immagine digitale nella circolazione e coproduzione sociale.

| Focussing on the practices adopted to define but also, quite literally, perform the self through these technologies, this study has shown how our understanding of what constitutes the self has shifted from an ontologi- cal given to a coproduced data assemblage that is a key commodity within the Internet of Things. Not only does the self-portrait include, whether through presence or implied absence, both the artist and the viewer, it also comprises the wider environment of its production. In this sense, the self-portrait is a technology for reproduction. | Concentrandosi sulle pratiche adottate per definire ma anche, letteralmente, eseguire il sé attraverso queste tecnologie, questo studio ha mostrato come la nostra comprensione di ciò che costituisce il sé si sia spostata da un dato ontologico a un assemblaggio di dati coprodotto che è un prodotto chiave all’interno dell’Internet of Things.
